Sheynnis Palacios is a model, businesswoman, TV host, and social worker who made history in 2023 by becoming the first Nicaraguan woman to win the crown of Miss Universe.

She started competing in beauty pageants while studying at her school and represented her home region of Carazo in the Miss Teen Nicaragua 2016 pageant which she won. In 2017, she was included in the Top 10 of the Miss Teen Universe 2017 held in Managua, Nicaragua.

She represented Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, in the Miss World Nicaragua 2020 crown which she won on 16 May 2020. In 2020 and 2021, she could not participate in the Miss World pageants as those beauty shows were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 16 March 2022, she graced the stage of the 70th edition of Miss World, held at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico after emerging as the winner of a head-to-head Fastrack challenge. She could not win the title and finished in the Top 40. She could not compete in the 2022 Reinado Internacional del Café as she tested positive for COVID-19.

Sheynnis Palacios won the Miss Universe 2023 competition which was held at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador on 18 November 2023. The first runner-up was Thai model Anntonia Porsild, and the second runner-up was Australian model Moraya Wilson.

She made many records during her record-breaking win which included becoming the fifth Nicaraguan woman to enter the semifinals, the first Nicaraguan to win the title, and the second woman from Central America to be crowned Miss Universe after Panama’s Justine Pasek who was originally 1st runner-up and inherited the title after the original titleholder was dethroned in 2002.

She chose the British author, philosopher, and women’s rights advocate, Mary Wollstonecraft, in response to the question that who she would choose if she had to spend one year in another woman’s year, and the reason behind it. She gave the reason that Mary fought bravely for women’s rights and said,
She opened [a] gap and gave an opportunity to many women. What I would do, I would want that gap [to] open up so that women could work in any area that they chose to work in because there [are] no limitations for women. That was 1750. Now in 2023, we’re making history.”

She said that she was proud and happy after winning the title for her country and said,
My skin crawled when I heard backstage when they said Nicaragua, my heart swelled and it made me feel very happy, to represent not only Nicaraguan women, but an entire country.”

Sheynnis Palacios has also worked as a television host and presenter of the TV Red (Canal 11) TV show ‘Understand Your Mind,’ which raises awareness about mental health. She also has an interest in creating content.

She once said that her aim was to start her own International PR company and become an audio-visual producer. She also aimed to pursue her postgraduate degree in cinematography and a master’s degree in audiovisual production.

In November 2020, she started a fundraiser project named ‘Uniting Lives’ after two hurricanes hit Nicaragua. She said that her purpose was to rebuild the San Bartolo bridge to help the affected people. She raises funds for children to receive cleft palate and cleft lip surgery at the Smile Nicaragua Operation Centre under the ‘Smiles That Teach’ project. She started a veterinary clinic in the La Fuente neighbourhood in Managua ‘Beauty With a Purpose.’

She has helped more than 60 women with anxiety-related issues through her mental health awareness TV show named ‘Understand Your Mind’ as she herself suffered anxiety during her teenage years. Sheynnis Palacios has organised more than 100 fundraisers for her social help projects.

She runs a food business venture in partnership with her mother which is named Buñuelos La Guadalupana.

Sheynnis Palacios talked about a harassment incident when she was 17 years old. She disclosed that once she was in the washroom (toilet) of a restaurant in Managua when a male person tried to make a MMS on his phone by recording her.

She has an affection for dogs and has four dogs named Bruce, Brownie, Koda, and Simba. She likes to play with other animals such as Iguana.

She wore a dress based on the El Zanate bird (similar to the Grackle bird) during the national costume round of Miss Universe 2023; this bird is found in excess in Nicaragua. A few news reporters and people made memes about her by dressing in black bags which was not well-received by many people as most of the people liked her dress.
